Washington (and California) saw the country’s largest increase in unsheltered and chronically homeless in last decade.

Outside of Washington and California, the rest of the nation saw a 34% decline in unsheltered homeless.

Washington is following California’s failed track record of low-barrier housing and allowing open drug use on the streets.

The rate of drug overdose deaths has more than doubled in the 21st century (9.5 per 100,000 in 2000 vs. 22.5 per 100,000 in 2020). The problem has grown particularly acute in the last five years with the per capita death rate increasing by 50% in that time frame.

Democratic Actions:

Introduced bills, and passed them out of policy committees, to legalize possession of hard drugs, including methamphetamines, heroin, cocaine, and LSD (SB 5476 in 2021).

Voted to allow homeless encampments on school property (2021 budget amendment).

Washington State currently holds the longest streak of Democratic governors in the nation, having last elected a Republican to the top executive office in 1980. The WA State Senate and House have been under Democrat control for over 20 years (see chart below). Democrats do NOT have solutions.
Republican Solutions:
