FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEFeb. 24, 2026CONTACT: John Sattgast, Senior Public Information Officer | 360-786-7257 Rep. Michelle Valdez announces she will not seek re-electionAfter 12 years representing Washington's 26th Legislative District, Rep. Michelle Valdez announced today that she will not seek re-election to the Washington State House of Representatives. Valdez, who recently changed her last name from Michelle Caldier following her marriage, said the decision comes after thoughtful consideration of both her personal priorities and the district's evolving political direction. "Serving the people of the 26th District has been one of the greatest honors of my life," Valdez said. "For more than a decade, I have worked to protect foster youth, seniors, individuals with disabilities, crime victims, and working families - always striving to pair compassion with fiscal responsibility and accountable government." Following the most recent election, one party now holds a three-fifths supermajority in the Legislature. Valdez said she believes balance, transparency, and healthy debate are essential components of effective governance. "I respect the will of the voters," she said. "At the same time, I believe our state is strongest when there is thoughtful oversight, sustainable budgeting, and a genuine exchange of ideas that ensures policies are carefully considered." Valdez expressed deep gratitude to her constituents, colleagues, staff, and family for their support throughout her legislative service. "It has been the privilege of a lifetime to serve this community," she said. "I remain hopeful about Washington's future and grateful for the trust the 26th District placed in me for 12 years." # # # Washington State House Republicanshouserepublicans.wa.gov |
