Benton Endorses Rossi

Benton Endorses Dino Rossi
TUMWATER, WA - The Benton for U.S. Senate Campaign today issued the
following statement made by Senator Don Benton:
“Four months ago, I set out on a journey to unseat Patty Murray - to
help reclaim sanity in Washington DC and turn our country away from
the dangerous direction it is headed.
The times could not be more consequential. While politicians like
Patty Murray dither in Washington DC:
· Our future grows uncertain,
· Corruption escalates in what was promised to be the most clean and
transparent government in history,
· Our standing in the world is diminished by the day,
· Jobless claims remain far too high,
· And our ever-expanding national debt threatens our way of life.
The American people have spent the last few years worrying that high
government spending will undo this republic. They see record deficit
spending, and they are worried that the economic tragedy in Greece
is a preview of things to come.
I have always fought for small government, low spending, and lower
taxes. I fought for these principles when I was chairman of the
Republican Party, and I have fought for them for the past 16 years
in the state legislature. I will continue to fight to reduce
the size and scope of government at every level.
But this is not what Patty Murray believes in. Patty Murray is
spending our money faster than we can give it to her. And whatever
she cannot take from taxpayers, she’ll borrow from China, and
mortgage our children’s future along with it.
We are facing very real problems in America, and it seems as though
Patty Murray and our current Congress is completely unable and
unwilling to tackle our biggest obstacles.
Because the times could not be more consequential, I must take a
close look at what is best for our state and nation now that Dino
Rossi has entered the race.
Patty Murray has 6 million special interest dollars in the bank. To
defeat her, we must consolidate our resources, and work together to
put our country back on the right track.
This goal is extremely difficult to achieve when our resources are
divided in a closely contested primary between several
well-qualified candidates.
Therefore, since this campaign has never been about me, I have
decided to do what is best for my country, my party, and my fellow
Washingtonians: I am stepping aside to endorse Dino Rossi.
I am extremely proud of the campaign we have run. My campaign united
thousands of like-minded supporters across this state. We have
created a huge grassroots network, reached over 10,000 fans on
Facebook, and gained endorsements from elected officials statewide.
I want to thank all of the people who have supported me and helped
me even in the smallest way with this campaign. You will never know
how much I appreciate the trust you have placed in me. I will
continue to fight for you and the things that are important to you.
But, now it is time to come together for a common cause for the good
of the state and our nation. We must win this seat and turn our
country back to the principles that have made us the greatest nation
on earth.”

Benton make the announcement.

Subject: NEWS from WASHINGTON HOUSE REPUBLICANS: Angel says tax increases will be 'extremely painful' for citizens, votes no
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- April 10, 2010
Angel says tax increases will be ‘extremely painful’ for
citizens, votes no
Majority Democrats in the House of Representatives today approved a
tax increase package totaling nearly $2.5 billion over the next
three years. The vote was 52-44.
Rep. Jan Angel,
R-Port Orchard, voted “no” on
Senate Bill 6143 and issued the following statement:
“I’m
very disappointed that this Legislature is increasing taxes by
billions of dollars in the middle of one of the worst recessions our
state has ever experienced. More than 4,600 people are looking for
work in the 26th District. Thousands more who are working have
reduced hours. Many businesses are on the edge of closing. This tax
package is going to be extremely painful for our people and will
result in more job losses and businesses closing or moving because
they cannot afford tax increases.
“This
especially hits the 26th District very hard. We’re a blue-collar
community and many of the tax increases in this legislation take
direct aim at those people.
“My
district office in Port Orchard is next to a restaurant. A beer
truck driver unloading product next door came to my office and
outlined what impact these tax increases will have on distributors,
retailers and restaurants. That just one segment of the more than 20
tax increases that were approved today in the House.
“We’re
at the end of a special session, which has now cost taxpayers nearly
$250,000, and the only solution to our budget mess that we’ve been
allowed to vote on is tax increases. We should have used this time
to restructure our state budget and provide reforms that would get
people working again. Instead, the majority party has spent all this
time debating which taxes to increase. This is the wrong direction
for our state and will only prolong this recession.
“I’m
very concerned the worst is not over. But on the positive side, I’m
going to be working as hard as I can in our communities to find ways
to help our employers create jobs and retain existing ones. I want
to make sure people are taking home a paycheck again, and I’m
determined to get people back to work.”

Update from Rep. Jan Angel - SPECIAL SESSION ALERT!
March 17, 2010

The Legislature was supposed to have completed its business and adjourned its 60-day session last Thursday, March 11. Instead, the governor called a special session, which began Monday, because majority Democrats were unable to reach an agreement on a supplemental operating budget that would address a $2.7 billion shortfall, and on their proposed tax increase of nearly $1 billion.
I’ve received many calls, e-mails and letters about the Legislature going into overtime. I want you to know that I share your frustration!
My Republican colleagues and I had been prepared to vote and bring this session to a close ON TIME. Instead, in the last week and a half of the regular session, the House speaker brought out only a few bills and resolutions to vote on. We’ve been waiting on the Democrats to bring legislation to the floor for a vote.
REPUBLICANS WAIT AS DEMOCRATS FIGHT AMONG THEMSELVES
Before
I go further, I think it’s important for you to understand this:
Democrats have the majority votes in the Legislature. They have 61
votes in the House. Republicans have only 37 votes. In the Senate,
Democrats have 31 votes and Republicans have 18 votes. My point is that it is NOT partisan politics that held up the session. Democrats had enough votes on their own to pass a supplemental budget and adjourn on time WITHOUT A SPECIAL SESSION.
Unfortunately, while we waited for them to bring legislation to the floor so that we could wrap up the session on time, the Democrats were busy fighting among themselves because “they can't quite agree on the damage they want to do!”
Those aren’t my words. They are the words of Seattle Times editorial writer Kate Riley, who wrote a column about the disagreements between members of the majority party that has pushed this session into overtime. Read it here: “Democrats turning on Democrats: There has got to be a better way.”
The special session was supposed to begin at noon, Monday. However, no floor action was scheduled until yesterday. The majority party had us vote on 15 bills. The first bill was a measure that would have the state borrow $861 million for energy retrofitting of schools with no means to repay the debt of about $63 million a year. (Read the opinion editorial on this bill from my colleague, Rep. Dan Kristiansen.) With interest, it would cost taxpayers $1.5 billion over 25 years to borrow this money. We’re already in a $2.7 billion deficit. Democrats plan to raise taxes to plug that hole, and now they want to borrow money at a cost of $1.5 billion? What’s wrong with this picture?
THERE IS NO GOOD REASON FOR THIS COSTLY SPECIAL SESSION
A special session costs $18,000 a day and they sent lawmakers home yesterday after working for only 2 1/2 hours. We worked through the afternoon today, but took very few votes. There will be no floor votes tomorrow, but we will be back Friday, and then work Saturday and Sunday.
Today is the third day of the special session. The money spent this week for this extended session could have paid for a teacher’s salary for a year. It could have paid for 24 people to be on the Basic Health Plan for one year.
You bet I’m frustrated. And I know you are too!
MAJORITY PARTY SEEKS TAX HIKES TO INCREASE SPENDING DURING RECESSION
Even more frustrating, though, is that the governor has called a special session so the majority party can pass a supplemental budget with tax increases totaling nearly a billion dollars!

This, at a time when more than 359,000 people in Washington are out of a job. That’s more than the populations of Bremerton, Port Orchard, Gig Harbor, Tacoma, University Place, Fife, Bainbridge Island, Poulsbo, and Shelton combined! The 26th Legislative District has 4,648 people out of work. The Kitsap Sun reported yesterday that Kitsap County has the highest unemployment rate in two decades. Read the Kitsap Sun article.
Why should people who have lost their jobs be required to pay more taxes to bail out state government from its poor spending decisions?
Those poor spending decisions continue, even in the Democrats’ latest budget proposal. The Seattle Times reported that despite claims by the governor and majority Democrats that they’ve “cut the budget,” spending is on track to INCREASE!
Here’s a portion of the article:
“The budget plans, for example, would cut $78 million from the class-size-reduction initiative, I-728, and millions more from social services and higher education. Total cuts currently range from about $650 million in the House budget to more than $900 million in the governor's. However, the cuts are offset by around $900 million, or more, in increased spending in the budget proposals.”
Click here to read the Seattle Times article.
The $900 million in new and increased spending is nearly the same amount as the majority party has proposed to increase your taxes!
HOUSE REPUBLICANS BELIEVE JOBS, NOT TAX INCREASES, ARE THE SOLUTION TO THE BUDGET CRISIS
House Republicans have provided solutions that would set spending priorities and balance this budget WITHOUT TAX INCREASES. We proposed a “Made in Washington” jobs plan that would free up resources for employers in the private sector so they could retain employees and hire again.
We have repeatedly offered our solutions and have been repeatedly turned away by the majority party. We also fought on the House floor for 10 hours to protect the will of the people and save Initiative 960 (Taxpayer Protection Act) from being overturned. Unfortunately, Senate Bill 6130 passed and the governor signed it into law.

Tax increases will only further hurt our economy and families, it will drive employers and jobs into Idaho, it will increase unemployment, and it will create deeper budget deficits long into the future.
I believe tax increases are unnecessary and harmful, and I remain committed to adopting a fiscally responsible budget that makes government live within its means, as you do at home or work.
Call the governor, the House speaker and the Senate majority leader. Tell them “We can’t take any more taxes!” The number is 1-800-562-6000. Do it now!
I invite you to contact my office any time you have questions, comments or suggestions about state government.
Sincerely,

Subject: Political Training for Creating Youth Based Political Movements and Organizations
From: chrisihler@gmail.com
Date: Mon, 15 Feb 2010 12:55:13 -0800
We have crucial days ahead of us in this country. We can make a difference! But we must step forward to lead.
On February 27–28 the Sean Salazar for U.S. Senate campaign invites you and other people of all ages, but especially the youth, to join us for a two-day political leadership class. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming an effective campaign leader and would like to know how Obama and Reagan were able to mobilize youth based movements this is the course for you . My goal is to train over 100 students, young people and candidates from all corners of Washington State to be involved in leading others in the political process.
For only $30, the seminar host will provide a hotel stay in Seattle, meals, campaign training, and materials. Our goal is give students the knowledge, training, and confidence to support any political candidate of their choice.
I have participated in many political training seminars in the past. This one is, quite simply, the best. Shortly after receiving training two years ago, I led over 70 people in support of my favorite candidate. Please take a strong look at this seminar, Facebook link, read the flyer, and pass the opportunity to other, elected officials, candidates, organizations, and students.

Citizens in the 26th District may participate from the comfort of their own homes
Rep. Jan Angel is inviting citizens to join her Tuesday evening, Feb. 9, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. for a telephone town hall meeting to discuss the legislative session and issues related to state government.
“I’m really excited to use this new technology to reach out to citizens in the 26th District and hear their views on the issues they care about,” said Angel, R-Port Orchard. “Close to 30,000 people will be called and invited to stay on the line and join in a community conversation. They can participate from the comfort of their own homes. The technology works much like a call-in radio show. The interactive telephone system gives residents the ability to listen to a live conversation, ask questions and take part in poll questions."
Angel said people are also welcome to dial-in directly by calling the toll-free Community Conversation number: 1-877-229-8493, and entering PIN code: 15472 when prompted. Once on the line, participants may select *3 (star 3) on their telephone keypad to ask a question.
"As a state representative, it is really important for me to hear what’s on people’s minds. The timing is right because we are at the halfway mark of the legislative session and we’re voting on important issues that will affect citizens in the district and throughout the state. This is a great way to communicate with people about these issues," said Angel. "I encourage everyone to pick up the phone and be a part of our community conversation. It's a free call, fun and interesting, and a way to make your voice heard about issues affecting state government and the 26th District."

Subject: Save May 21-23 for the 2010 Cascade Conference
Date: Mon, 1 Feb 2010 18:06:34 -0800
Dear friend,
Please save the dates of the evening of May 21 through the morning
of May 23 for the 2010 Cascade Conference. This is going
to be an historic gathering. After the Massachusetts, New
Jersey and Virginia elections, 2010 looks like another
transformative year – in terms of
Republicans making a significant comeback after the drubbings in
2006 and 2008. But, we aren’t going to win by just being
against the President and the Democrats. We must have
quality candidates and positive
solutions to the real issues. As we saw in those three states,
we need to win over the independents. This conference will be
focused on the futuristic issues:
energy, health, education and the
GOP’s future; on thought-provoking national speakers; and on
strategic campaign ideas.
We will include the quality
candidates and potential candidates.
As you will note below, I am chairing this conference – with the
valuable help of ten luminaries.
Rob McKenna and I are inviting major national speakers. We
will have intelligent, articulate panelists. Plus, this will
be a great opportunity for you to network with key community and
political leaders from throughout the state.
I hope you will come. Also, I encourage you to sign up for
your hotel room today and get a terrific $89 rate.
Even if you live in the central Puget Sound region, we’d like to
have everybody stay at the hotel to make it possible for more
interaction. That’s why we negotiated such a low rate.
You won’t want to miss this!
Sign up today
at
http://www.washingtonmainstream.org/cascade1.html.
Yours for an exciting conference,

Secretary of State Sam Reed
P.S. Please forward this on to your email list. We
need to get the word out.
